SE Lab Policies

Please read the following documentation for information on printers, projectors, public computers, software, and contact information. The SE Lab is located at DC 3334 and the SWAG Lab is located at DC 3544. The printers in these rooms are restricted for use of occupants within these rooms. For computer accounts on the public machines, listed below, please contact the lab managers listed in the Conact section.

Public Computers

The SE lab has several machines set up for general lab use. These machines are jasper, tremblant, charolettetown, and royalyork. These machines are running a dual boot system, with Windows 2000/Linux installed. DO NOT lock these machines for extended periods of time, other people may need to use them.

To obtain an account on these machines, please contact that lab manager, and he/she will add on for you. For any software that you need to installed on these machines, please contact the current lab manager and they will do it for you.

Software

For software on the public machines, as mentioned above, please contact the lab manager to install the software for you if it requires administrator privileges. Recreational software (such as CD rippers, P2P applications, games, etc..) will not be installed on these machines. For software problems/questions on personal machines, please feel free to email us as well. If there is software that you need, it is possible that we have a liscence for it and can install it on your machine. Examples of software you may want that we can get for you are (this is not a complete list):

  • XWin32 - an xhost server for windows. It will allow you to log onto Unix/Linux machines using an xsession.
  • SSH client - secure shell client
  • Norton Antivirus
  • WSFTP
  • Visio
  • Visual Studio
  • Microsoft Office Premium
  • Microsoft Windows 2000
  • Microsoft Windows XP

Printers

The SE lab has one printer, an HP LaserJet 4050. It is located in the rear of the SE lab for use of the occupants of that lab. It has the IP address 129.97.79.98. It's hostname is se-hp1.math.uwaterloo.ca.

The SWAG lab has two printers, an HP LaserJet 4050 and an Lexmark Optra SC 1275 which is a color lasar printer. They are located in the SWAG lab for use of the occupants of that lab. The Hp printer has the IP address 129.97.79.33. It's host name is lj4-dc3546.math.uwaterloo.ca. The Lexmark printer has the IP address 129.97.79.67 and the host name optrasc1275n-dc3546.uwaterloo.ca.

To install one of these printers on you computer (using Windows 2000):

  1. Open Control Panel, then Printers.
  2. Double click on "Add Printer"
  3. Click "Next".
  4. At the screen titled "Local or Network Printer", select "Local printer" and uncheck "Automatically detect and install my Plug and Play printer"
  5. Click "Next".
  6. At the screen "Select the Printer Port", select "Create a new port".
  7. Click "Next".
  8. Enter the IP address of the printer you wish to add.
  9. Click "Next".
  10. Click "Finish".
  11. You will be promted to select a driver for the printer you have added. If you are adding one of the HP printers, select the "HP LaserJet 4050 Series PS". If you are adding the Lexmark, select the Lexmark Optra SC 1275 PS printer driver.
  12. Finish installing by entering a printer name, etc. in the screens that follow. Do not set the printer as a shared printer.
For any problems with these printers, please contact the current lab manager(s). When you see the "toner low" message on either of these printers, please send us an email right away so that we can order more toner. Also, if there is a shortage of paper, please contact as before it runs out so that we can order more paper.

Projector

The SE Lab has one multimedia projector, an EPSON PowerLite. It can be booked when needed for presentations and classes.

Booking the projector

There is an online booking system that you must use if you wish to use the projector, which is locate here . However, you will need a softbase account in order to use this system, and you will need to run the following command before you can do any booking:

/fsys2/projects/bookings/bin/bookpwd

This will set up your web booking password.If any of you require a softbase account, email the current SE/SWAG lab managers. We will try to have one made for you.

Getting the projector

Once you have booked the projector, you will need to get it!!! It is located in a filing cabnet, at the back of the SE Lab (DC 3334). It is the one facing you when you turn the corner. It is locked, so you will need a key. The following people have a key, so you can email one of them to unlock the cabnit and retrieve it for you. When you are done, please return the projector by the end of the booking period, because others may have it booked after you.

Setting up projector

**Before your first time using the projector, please read the manual which is located with the projector.**

  1. Plug the projector into the display port on the back of your laptop.
  2. Then plug the projector into the outlet.
  3. Push the red power button on the top of the machine. Give it about 30 seconds to warm up. A green light will flash during this time. **REMEMBER** Remove the lens cap from the from of the projector when you turn it on.
  4. If a display does not come up, make sure you have directed output to the projector, and then if a display still does not come up, press the source key on the top of the projector to select the correct input source.
  5. If you wish to use the remote, attach the USB connection to the projector and you computer. If you have Windows 2000/XP it should automatically install the required software. Using "Page Up" and "Page Down" you can control your power point presentations.

Notes on turning it off

**DO NOT** just unplug it.

  1. After using the projector, push the power button twice.
  2. An orange light will blink. When it quits blinking, and is solid, you may unplug the projector.
  3. If you need to turn it on again, wait until the light quits blinking and push power.

Tablet PC

The SE lab has in its possesion a Toshiba Tablet PC. It is intended for use at conferences and talks, both locally and internationally. It should be booked before being used and can be booked at the SE Tablet booking web site. Please try to book in advance to avoid conflicts and give others a chance to plan around your activities.

The tablet has two peripheral devices that you can use. There is an USB CDR/W and an USB memory key. Please ensure that both of these devices as well as all other contents of the laptop bag such as cables and power cords are present when returning the unit.

If you have any questions about how to use the tablet, please contact the lab manager.

The tablet is stored in the filing cabinet with the projector. To access this equipment, email or call one of the key holders listed under the projector section .
