I am a Ph.D. student under the supervision of M. Tamer Özsu in database group. I am a member of the XDB project.

Research Interests

My current research interests focus on XML query processing and optimization. At the query processing side, we have designed and implemented an XML storage scheme that supports efficient query processing and update. On top of this storage structure, we developed an efficient navigational operator (NoK) to answer XPath queries. At the optimization side, we developed a compact synopsis structure (XSEED) that estimates the cardinality of an XPath query. This synopsis structure can be used for a cost-based query optimizer to estimate the cost of a query plan based on the cardinalities of its subqueries. I also worked as a summer intern at the IBM Almaden Research Center on the statistical learning techniques (COMET) that accurately model the cost of a complex XML operator. This methodology is potentially useful to model the cost of any complex operators.

My broader research interests include machine learning and its application in database management systems, data mining, information retrieval, data integration, and many theoretical aspects of database systems.

Projects:

  1. XDB
I am looking at the issues related to XML storage structures, query processing, and query optimization techniques.
  2. GeoEngine
My master's thesis work. I was looking at the issues related to route queries (i.e., shortest paths in large network systems).
